Problem
A major Indonesian telco was modernizing its legacy systems through a middleware integration layer. The testing process was entirely manual, with regression cycles taking hours.
Approach
Mapped the full application architecture and business workflows to design comprehensive test coverage. Identified the most-repeated test scenarios and built automation for them.
The judgment call
The team wanted to automate everything. I prioritized the 20% of test cases that ran most frequently and caught 80% of regressions. Complete coverage sounds rigorous but takes months. Targeted coverage ships in weeks and catches what matters. It is the testing equivalent of the 80/20 rule in training: most of your fitness gains come from consistent easy runs, not from occasional hero workouts.
Outcome
Regression testing time dropped from four hours to five minutes. The framework became the team’s standard for all subsequent testing.
