Live Commerce Product Tools

ByteDance / Tokopedia · Regional Product Manager · Feb 2024 – Present

Problem

Sellers conducting live-stream commerce sessions had to pause their streams to add new products to the catalog. This broke the flow of live selling and cost sellers viewer attention and potential sales.

Approach

Designed a simplified product creation flow optimized for the live context: fewer required fields, auto-suggested categories, and instant publishing. The principle was the same as triathlon transitions: minimize time spent not moving forward.

The judgment call

Product wanted to add validation steps to ensure listing quality. I argued for speed over perfection in the live context. A listing with a missing description that goes live in 10 seconds generates more revenue than a perfect listing that takes 3 minutes while viewers leave. We could always add quality checks post-session.

Outcome

Adopted in thousands of live sessions. The vast majority of products listed through the feature generated transactions, confirming that reducing friction in the listing flow directly translates to commerce activity.
